So calming...Love this song.

The bass is really what brings this song together, in my opinion. The way you made it mesh so well with the piano and wind instruments is just flawless.

OpenLight responds:

I loved getting the bass to sound the way it did. I made sure to remove all mid and treble noises from the bass instrument so it was just absolute pure bass, then I tried to stick with simple patterns.

Thanks for the review! I'm glad it's as calming as it seems to be, because I was really wanting to make a calm song that was actually good.

Badass

This is a pretty big leap in your style, and it sounds awesome. The stereo panning worked great with the percussion, although the actual beat followed techno conventions a bit too much.

Also, Electric 3 = God in this song. You have a knack for making the most epic sounding element of your music.

OpenLight responds:

Thanks! This may be my last 2010 song since I'm going out of town on the 21st and I won't really be back until 2011, and I have finals up until the 15th.

Electric 3 is amazing. Haha. I love that instrument.

Sex. That's the genre name.

This song flows like fucking water, Solus, holy shit. The way you blended the percussion with the arpeggios and pads just made it so awesome. You kept up the pace by changing the melody at 2:50 and kept it fresh in doing so.

Absolutely amazing song. I would love to make it to the final round if it meant going up against talent like this.

SolusLunes responds:

Well, to be perfectly honest, blending anything with this style of percussion and making it sound silky smooth is not difficult at all. Maybe that's why I've been staying away from traditional "four on the floor" beats. This just flows so much nicer.

Woop...?

I love how this song turned out, dude. Like I said earlier, this utilizes your style in a pretty creepy manner, and I think that's great. I did notice something about it that I couldn't get past, though. The sound that comes in at 1:20 probably could've been better used if it came in periodically throughout the song instead of a constant, minute long string.

Besides that, though, this song is one of my favorites from you. In fact, it's on my favorites list now.

OpenLight responds:

Thanks! I noticed that about the sound too, but I didn't think about just removing it altogether in some parts. I tried remastering to make it fit better. I tried effects to make it sound different. I didn't think about just deleting, haha.

Thanks for the review! I'm glad to know I made a good song this time.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOH MY GOD...

I know this is an older song, but this song is so beautifully dirty! How the Hell do you do that sort of bass work?

Very nice.

The way you manipulated the bassline in this song is just amazing, and it flows some well with the percussion. You could've involved the melody more with the bass, but it still came out great.

Really nothing else to say, this was an awesome song.

You should do this more often.

The piano really brings out the less noticeable aspects of your style, OL. You should incorporate into your style more often.

OpenLight responds:

I would, but it took me so long to make the piano not sound awkward. Most of the songs with piano in it that I've made have been the hardest songs for me to make, but they always turn out fairly well. I use piano in most of my newer songs, and it even showed up for a while in Gust of Wind (of course, because it's 7:45 long and I needed a lot of instruments).

I'm glad you liked it! And, if you wanted to do a contest, I'd be fine entering that one, too. Just tell drew so he'll know too, because I'm sure he'd participate.

Wow.

This is an awesome song, due. Since I've started listening to your music, I've tried modeling my 8-bit to have the melodic structure that yours has, but with no luck. You easily capture the feel of your subject matter when you do these songs.

You are seriously a talented musician.

Calamaistr responds:

Hm, i think it just has to do with me having listened to many, many, many classical works from Bach, brahms, mozart and fauré. In some periods i tend to have only classical music on my mp3 player (im even oldschool in life, not that long ago i had a casette walkman still hah) and can easily whistle whole pieces from these masters, even without the music on.
The mechanics, the logic of composing is embedded into my brain cause of it, add to it some interesting finds on the internet such as 'stephen malinowski's videos on yt' that contain a sidescrolling interactive scores of classical pieces and this just becomes natural.

Im convinced that would you take some time to get used to the music from the masters, to the point that you perhaps too can whistle them whole.. youll be making melodical music just as easily.
I dont want to brag but i can make most of my tracks within 15 minutes, i could make 50 of them a day would i want to. Thing is, i also make alot of music that i just delete right after cause its not interesting enough to me, the best music for some reason always makes itself.

The trance i talked about, just being lost in time for a bit and the melodies just literally as mathematical equations build upon itself. This track did aswell thats why i think its so good, id almost say i didnt 'make it, ..afterall creating music isnt really possible, in reality you discover music. The possibilities are there, the tones just have to be brought together.

Anyhow, you flatter me again. I think people like us live in the wrong time, the times go to fast, generations force itself in front of eachother, some call it progress but all is relative really.
8bit music isnt as popular, i too sometimes make high fidelity music.. wouldnt make orchestral though i cant stand it tbh.. all that hans zimmerish copyism, the horns drumriffs and drums making the emotion of pressure again and again, always the same damn chords..
But when i look upon preferances, most just eat up what the radio/tv tops feed them, with no disrespect meant most of these genre's such as todays pop (michael jackson was actually great but pop nowadays?) rap (im not even going to comment on this) or dance (i made trance music when i was 13 and better than todays most payed artists) just isnt as comitted and creative like it used to be.. we all know why.. its because every talent be it music art or sports is used by corporations that go after the market, if the market wants the color blue, you need to make the color blue or it wont sell. The thing is the market doesnt have any skill/knowledge about the arts themselves, so its like a blind man guiding a blind man. If only people would be educated in the dimensions of music.

An interview i read in a plane on my way to portugal last summer about some music artist, dont remember who.. said something about this subject a bit like that you can only hope that in time peoples preference evolves, and that will be our time to shine.

p.s. sorry if this reply is coming off somewhat disorganised, im typing my thoughts. :)

What'll happen next?

That's always what I think to myself when I listen to your songs. There's always this sort of theme and variation that goes on with your songs that has me wondering how you can keep a single melody so fresh as the song progresses.

I wish I could tell you how to improve, but your style leaves me unable to pick at it. I don't ever do this, but could you give one of my songs a listen?

LLAAPPSSEE responds:

Thanks for listening Retro. I appreciate your reviews. I'm not sure how I do it, man. I just do. Heh.

Wild, ever-changing, awesome...

I expected a song longer than 7 minutes would have to have some variety, but this song was changing at every turn. Always with the pitch bending and awesome melodies with you.

The way it slowed down in the middle really caught me off guard, I was like, "Wait, wha?" Then it slowly started to pick up again and I was like, "!"

5:40: "!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Some of the things you think of make me mad that I didn't think of them first. I'll have to do what I always do and use a possible remix as an excuse to do all the same stuff.

6:30 on: Stop it. Just stop it. "Oh, look at me, I can do crazy stuff with these synths!" I am anger.

And, to top it all off, you brought back the beginning. Nice close to a nice song.

OpenLight responds:

Yes! I'm so glad I'm done with this song though, hahaha. This song took HOURS more than my usual songs.

Haha, I really don't have anything else to say in reply. Thanks!
